Blasio: Public Advocate for the City of New York
Dear Friends,

As I write, two safety-net hospitals in Brooklyn—Interfaith Medical Center and Long Island College Hospital (L.I.C.H.)—are poised to shut their doors.  And four more neighborhood hospitals—Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Kingsbridge Jewish, Brookdale, and SUNY Downstate—are teetering on the brink. We cannot afford to lose these vital health care facilities and we will keep fighting to keep their doors open.

New York City has already lost more than a dozen hospitals in the past decade, contributing to a growing health care crisis.  In recent weeks, my office has initiated legal action to prevent the shutdown of L.I.C.H., and we have called on the New York State Department of Health to fund a restructuring plan to save Interfaith. Still, recent reports reveal that Interfaith Medical Center will begin preparations to close its doors beginning next week.

It is important that New Yorkers are aware of these imminent service cuts which could dramatically increase travel time to the nearest hospital for more than 250,000 Brooklyn residents.  If you reside or work in the vicinity of these hospitals—or know someone who does—please help spread the word.  The maps below document the communities that will be most impacted by these closures. Additional details are available athttp://advocate.nyc.gov/hospitals

If you, a family member or a neighbor has been denied care at L.I.C.H. or Interfaith, or is denied care in the weeks ahead, we urge you to report the incident to our office.  You can submit your report by sending an email to hospitals@pubadvocate.nyc.gov or you can call our hotline at 212.669.7250.

To address this epidemic of hospital closures, I laid out a plan to create a Brooklyn Health Authority to help struggling hospitals modernize, improve care, and ensure core emergency and primary medical care are protected at the neighborhood level.

Thank you for helping to spread the word.  Working together, we can protect our community hospitals.

Sincerely,
Bill de Blasio
