So many PPPs (public private partnerships) and so little time. But here's a scam that will have both George Orwell and Aldous Huxley spinning gleefully in their graves:
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has just bestowed Clemson U. in South Carolina with a $1 million dollar grant to fit middle school kids with Galvanic Skin Response bracelets. The devices were originally invented as "neuromarketers" by a company called Affectiva, to measure consumer response to various products and ads.
Now that consumers are becoming an endangered species due to the Depression, some genius came up with the creepy idea of using these biosensors to measure the educational/emotional buzz the students are getting from their teachers. The PPP people, of course, deny that the tools will be used to measure teacher performance, providing one more excuse to get rid of teachers (and unions.)
It is fitting that South Carolina will get first dibs, since it's where George Bush memorably asked: "Is our children learning?"
I think we should force all the politicians to start wearing the GSR bracelets and use them as little lie detectors, measuring their emotional engagement with lobbyists as compared to constituents. Then, when we can scientifically prove they're all crooks, they can be sentenced to home confinement with no pension, no perks and no health insurance. Maybe their PPP buddies can get them a good deal on ankle bracelets while they're at it.
