Liu: Politics Affects Subsidy Decisions

City Comptroller John Liu said his office is readying a report that will show how noneconomic factors, including politics, affect the awarding of Economic Development Corp. subsidies to developers. “The approach of the EDC is very political,” he said. “I think that needs to be said.” Liu said the study would give examples. He asserted that some builders in his former City Council district of Flushing “can't even get their foot in the door” at the EDC because they are not large or politically connected developers. EDC declined to comment.
