Ban Horse Carriages Protest Honor Charlie

TWO NOTICES – BOTH RELATED  

#1 – CARRIAGE HORSES– On the one-year anniversary of his death, please join us in remembering Charlie – a beautiful white draft horse who collapsed and died on October 23, 2011 on his way to work for the inhumane horse-drawn carriage business in NYC.    Found to have untreated stomach ulcers and a fractured tooth, Charlie was just one more victim of this inhumane exploitative business.  The many scuff marks on the street next to his body,  made by his hooves,  speak to the agonizing pain he must have felt as he died.

The Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriageshas been tirelessly working on this campaign since 2006, unfortunately at a time when the Mayor and Council Speaker Quinn unreasonably support the carriage trade – turning their backs on advocates, refusing to meet with us or consider our arguments and turning their backs on the many accidents that have been reported, suggesting that these horses would be dead if they did not have this job.   Some job – legally allowed to work for 9 hours a day, 7 days a week between the shafts of their carriages, wearing a bit and blinders; suffering the indignities and exhaustion of being double shifted, overloaded and working in the city’s congested traffic – all because of two people who do not care. 

Speaker Quinn has blocked every carriage horse ban bill that has come her way.  

WHAT:  memorial candle light vigil to honor Charlie Horse – and to once again call for a ban of this black mark on NYC’s tourism.   

WHEN:  Tuesday - October 23, 2012  - 6:45-8:00 pm

WHERE:   northwest corner of Central Park South and Fifth Avenue – (look for us)

NOTE:  We will have limited candles – you are welcome to bring your own.

#2 :  Just before this vigil, there will be a demo sponsored by those who are educating New Yorkers on Christine Quinn’s abysmal record as Speaker of the City Council.  This will be in front of an East Side Town Hall Meeting, which will be attended by many politicians.  Let them know that a Quinn mayoral candidacy is unacceptable.

WHEN:  Tuesday, October 23rd, 5:15 - 6:30 p.m.

NOTE:  The time is just right to finish protesting here and then walk over to the carriage horse vigil.
